Tigers Capture Big Come-from-Behind Victory over Nixa Eagles, 3-2

In a game that will go along way in determining the Central Ozark Conference Champion, and the Class 3 district seeding, the Ozark Tigers notched a huge victory over their Christian County rivals, the Nixa Eagles on Tuesday Night, winning 3-2.  The largest crowd of the year saw the Tigers fall behind twice, once in each half, but battle back to even the score, and then hit the game winning goal off a set piece for their only lead and the victory.

The Tigers, who lost a tough match last Thursday at the hands of Kickapoo, did start out sluggish in the early minutes of the match.  In just the second minute of the contest, Eagle Senior, Caleb Romero stole a ball from a defender, drove down the right side and then buried a hard, right-footed shot to the near side of the goal, beating Ryan Bilyeu, the Ozark goalkeeper.

With the Nixa fans still celebrating their first lead of the night, the Tigers quickly rebounded.  Just four minutes later, and only six minutes into the match, Tiger Senior, Seth Hampton made a quality, open field run with ball, made a fine pass to his right, finding Landon Hunter, who then delivered a great crossing pass to Zach Moore for a breakaway to the Eagle goal.  Moore deposited the ball with his left foot into the upper left corner of the goal, tying the game at one.

In the 18th minute, Tanner Pesek, who had just entered the game, wasted no time and took a corner kick that Ozark was unable to clear and score from six yards out, giving Nixa their one goal lead back.  The score remained at 2-1, with Nixa leading, until halftime.

In the second half, Ozark tied the match once again in the 59th minute, when Seth Hampton drove a ball into the goal from close range after a Jordan Burns corner kick that the Nixa defenders could not clear out of the six yard box.

The game-winning goal was scored just five minutes later when Landon Hunter flicked a header, from seventeen yards away, toward the Nixa goal.  The Nixa keeper who had come out from the goal to make a grab, could only watch the ball sail over his head, and into the net, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead.  This goal was off of a set piece pass from defender, Andrew Presnell, who delivered the ball from mid-field.

From the last fifteen minutes, Ozark controlled the majority of the possessions and were able to defend well in its zone, to win the match 3-2.

Ozark’s overall record improves to 8-3.

Tigers Suffer Tough Loss at Hands of Kickapoo 3-2

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

For the Tigers, an early 2-0 lead was not enough to hold back the hard-charging Kickapoo squad, as the Chiefs scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat the Tigers 3-2 on Tuesday night. The game-winning goal was scored by Aaron Strunk in stoppage time of the second half. In the first half, Kickapoo held possession for the majority of the time, but Ozark made the most of their attacks. Sophomore, Jacob Agee scored his first goal of the season from fifteen yards out, as he beat the Chief keeper, Tyler Moses, to his right. Just five minutes later, Seth Hampton scored on a shot that deflected twice before entering the goal: once off a defender in front of the Moses, and the other time off the crossbar, before entering the goal and giving Ozark an early 2-0 lead, just twenty minutes into the match. The goal was assisted by Landon Hunter. But the second half was a different match, with Kickapoo controlling the majority of the possessions. Kickapoo Senior Skyler Russell scored two goals in a six minute span tying the match at 2-2 just thirteen minutes into the second period. With the momemtum shifted to the Kickapoo side, the Chiefs continued to attack and capitalized with just a minute or two left in the game, when Strunk carried the ball down the right wing for 30 yards, then delivered it into the back of the net, out of the reach of Tiger keeper, Ryan Bilyeu, giving the Chiefs the 3-2 victory. JV Result: Kickapoo 5 Ozark 0 Ozark’s next match will be against their Christian County rivals, the Nixa Eagles on Tuesday, September 29th. JV will begin at 5:00pm.

Tigers Earn Tough Road Victory against Carthage 1-0

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009
DSC_0136 by bhampton2008.
The Ozark Tigers got their revenge against the Carthage squad Tuesday Night, winning 1-0.  This game was a rematch of the Christian County Tournament Final, that Carthage won in overtime, 2-1.

But this time Ozark got the lead in the second half and hung on for the victory.  This  victory improves the Ozarks’s overall record to 7-2.

After a scoreless first half, Zach Moore scored the game’s only goal in the sixth minute of the second half.  The goal was developed by a Seth Hampton centering pass that was headed to the front of the Carthage goal by a defender, right to Moore, who then delivered the ball to the corner of the net, from six yards out.

There were many other quality attacks for both teams in the second half, as this exciting game went back and forth, but with neither team able to finish.  Many of the Carthage attacks were stopped by a trio of Ozark’s defenders who played their best game of the year.  Brandon Erickson, Andrew Presnell, and Jordan Burns broke up many of the quality attacks by Carthage. Ozark’s Goalkeeper, Ryan Bilyeu, recorded his second consecutive 1-0 shutout.  His best save came late in the second half when he stopped a shot that was heading to his left, then was deflected to his right.  Bilyeu adjusted quickly to his right and stopped the shot with his right hand just before the ball entered the far right of the goal.

Ozark’s next contest will be versus the Kickapoo Chiefs on Thursday night, September 24th.  JV begins the night at 5:00 p.m.

JV Contest:  Carthage 4   Ozark 1

Ozark’s JV goal was scored by Freshman, Rodney Germia, who hit a quality left-footed shot from eighteen yards out, past the outstretched right-handed reach of the Carthage keeper, finding the upper part of the net.

The Ozark Tigers gained a 1-0 shutout victory over the Willard Tigers, Tuesday night at Tiger Stadium.  Ozark goalkeeper Ryan Bilyeu got his first 80 minute cleansheet of the season.

The first half was played virtuously to a stalemate until the final minute of the half when the Ozark squad began to show more patience on offense and set up a nice attack ending with senior, Seth Hampton squirting the ball from 9 yards out, past the Willard goalkeeper’s left side, and into the corner of the goal.  Hampton, who scored his third goal of the season, was served the ball by fellow senior, Zach Moore, who made an effective, low pass through a traffic of Willard defenders.

The second half, which was played mostly in heavy rain, saw neither team develop many quality attacks.  Willard’s final drive was their most effecitve one, with a Willard forward just delivering a shot wide of the goal after an excellent, centering pass.

That wide shot secured the 1-0 victory for Ozark and the clean sheet for Bilyeu.

Ozark improves their overall record to 6-2 and next play at Carthage on September 22nd.  That game will be a rematch of the Christian County Tournament final, which resulted in Carthage defeating Ozark 2-1 in overtime.

JV Result:  Willard 2   Ozark 1

In Ozark’s second round match, the Tigers faced the Webb City Cardinals.  The Cardinals defeated the Neosho Wildcats 3-2 the previous evening.  Ozark controlled this game from start to finish, winning 5-0.  Skyler Foster started for the Tigers and scored his first goal of his senior season off an assist from Seth Hampton.  At the twelve minute mark, Foster got his own rebound off a Cardinal goalkeeper save, then drilled a hard shot past the keeper to open the scoring for the Tigers.

Andrew Van Hoesen scored his second goal of the season, and the fifth and final goal for the Tigers taking advantage of a short goal kick by the Cardinal keeper, drilling the ball past the keeper’s right and into the corner of the net.  This victory advanced the Tigers to the championship match against the Carthage Tigers.

Ozark Opens Christian County Tournament with 4-2 Victory over Poplar Bluff Mules

Friday, September 11th, 2009
DSC_0792 by bhampton2008.
The Ozark Tigers advanced to the winner’s bracket in the Christian County Tournament, with a come-from-behind victory, over the Mules from Poplar Bluff.

Senior, Zach Moore scored three goals, while fellow senior, Seth Hampton scored the other.

The game did not start in the Tiger’s favor, as Poplar Bluff opened the game with strong attacks, ball control and excellent hustle.  Poplar Bluff was rewarded for their early hard work as Dustin Calvent scored from eighteen yards out in just the second minute of the game to give the Mules the early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers, having to regroup, started to gain more possessions after that, with more fluent passing.  Zach Moore scored his first goal with a hard right-footed shot that went to the goalkeeper’s right and found the back of the net, tying the score at one, just eight minutes into the game.  The goal was assisted by Landon Hunter who found Moore to his left after gaining control of the ball in the box.

Seth Hampton put the Tigers in the lead with a ball he possessed around mid-field, took a few dribbles, then delivered the shot to the near-post, past the goalkeeper’s right, putting the Tigers ahead for good 2-1.

Just four minutes into the second half, Moore scored his second goal with a hard right foot, after the Mules defense cleared the ball to the eighteen yard marker, after several Tiger chances in the box.  This made the score 3-1

Then just nine minutes later and from nearly the same spot, Zach Moore scored again, his third goal of the night, that the Mule’s goalkeeper misplayed, the ball going through his legs and into the back of the net.

Despite the deficit, the Mules continued to play hard and were able to gain a goal in the 67th minute, with Rhys Griffith scoring the Mule’s final goal.

The Tigers now play the Webb City Cardinals at 10:45, Sat. Morning at Tiger Stadium in Ozark. The Cardinals were also come-from-behind winners in the first game, then hung on to beat the Neosho Wildcats 3-2.  P.J. Armstrong scored two first half goals for Webb City and Carlos Reyes added the game winning goal with 12 minutes left to give the Cardinals the victory.  Brad Toomoth scored for Neosho to open the game.  Neosho was also awarded a second goal that tied the game after a Webb City defender deflected the ball into his own goal.

Poplar Bluff will face Neosho at Tiger stadium at 9 a.m. Sat. morning. in the loser’s bracket.

Other Christian County Tournament scores:

Tigers Hold off Parkview’s Late Rally, Win 2-1

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009
DSC_0778 by bhampton2008.

The Ozark Tigers improved their season record to 3-1 after a home victory over the Parkview Vikings on Wednesday night.  The final score was 2-1

The Tigers controlled possession most of the first half, with a handful of chances to open the scoring.  Zach Moore finally got the Tigers on the board with a breakaway goal that went just to the Parkview Goalkeeper’s left.  His diving attempt at a save was not enough and the shot found the lower corner of the goal.  The goal was assisted by senior, Skyler Foster, and put the Tigers up 1-0 just before halftime.

The early part of the second half was more evenly matched with a few, quality scoring chances for both teams.  Landon Hunter was able to put the ball in the back of the net and add to the Ozark lead with a right footed shot that glanced off the goalkeeper’s outsetched right hand. The ball then rolled into the net at the 57 minute mark of the game.

Parkview got on the scoreboard in final minutes of the game with a penalty kick that just beat Ozark’s goalkeeper, Ryan Bilyeu to his left.  The shot was awarded after an Ozark foul in the eighteen yard area.  Following the Parkview goal, the Vikings continued to develop scoring chances, but all were denied by the Ozark defense.

In the JV Contest, the Parkview squad shutout the JV Tigers 4-0

The Tigers begin play in the Christian County Tournament this weekend, with their first match on Friday night versus the Poplar Bluff Mules.  Their following contest will be Saturday morning against either the Webb City Cardinals or the Neosho Wildcats.
