Joplin gets two late goals to defeat the Tigers

Friday, October 17th, 2008

The Ozark Tigers were doing a good job of moving the ball and building their attacks on Thursday night and seemed to be winning the battle of possession.  Seth Hampton had a good look at goal late in the second half that went just right of the post.  But Joplin got numbers into the box in the 67th minute and managed to score on a hard shot taken from the middle of the 18-yard box.  Four minutes later, in the 71st minute of play, Ozark surged forward and earned a corner kick.  The Tigers pushed everyone up into the attack to try to capitalize on the opportunity to level the score . . . . but the ball was cleared out of the box and a Joplin midfielder managed to collect the ball quickly and send a great ball downfield into the corner where his teammate was able to run on to it.  The counter-attack developed so quickly for Joplin that the only Ozark defender who was back was forced to go wide to apply pressure and then the ball was served skillfully to a Joplin attacker who was streaking unmarked down the center of the field.  The Joplin attacker settled the ball on the run and took a touch to the right past Ozark’s charging keeper and then tucked the ball into the goal to seal the victory for Joplin.  Final score:  Joplin 2 and Ozark 0.

In the early match on Tuesday, the Ozark JV squad and Joplin’s JV squad finished in a nil-nil tie.

Ozark Finishes Fourth in Gold Division of Kickapoo Tournament

Monday, October 13th, 2008
Tigers opened the Kickapoo Shootout with a shutout victory on Friday.  Ozark got off to a strong start in their opening game of the Kickapoo tournament with a 3-0 win over the Marshfield Bluejays.  This was the second time the Tigers faced the Bluejays this season.  The first match resulted in an overtime victory for the Tigers.  But on this rematch, the Tigers controlled the game from the start with several scoring chances and strong forward play.  Senior T.J. Miner started the scoring by netting the game’s first goal in the 7th minute.  The score remained 1-0 until the 55th minute, when Zach Marlow kicked in a rebound from point blank range off of a Miner shot to make it 2-0.  Skyler Foster scored the game’s final goal for the Tigers in the 71st minute, making the final score 3-0.  Tiger goalkeeper Ryan Bilyeu recorded his second clean sheet of the season in just his fourth start of the year.
In the semi-final match on Saturday morning, the Ozark Tigers fell to the eventual Gold Division champions, the Eureka Wildcats, by a score of 4-0.  The Tigers faced another St. Louis area team, the Rockwood Summit Falcons, in the 3rd place match on Saturday afternoon.  The Falcons came out strong and racked up 3 goals in the opening 10 minutes of play against the Tigers.  The Falcons would add a fourth goal in the 29th minute to take a 4-0 lead into the halftime break.  Ozark did not give up any additional goals in a hard fought second half, but the Tigers were not successful in finding the back of the net to close the margin and the game ended with a score of 4-0 in favor of the Falcons.

Tigers Get Back on Winning Track with Victory over Lebanon

Sunday, October 5th, 2008
After two tough losses this week, the Tigers traveled to Lebanon Thursday night and thanks to a second half goal by Zach Moore, and some quality defense, got back to their winning ways.  Moore took a long pass down the middle of the field and beat the Lebanon YellowJacket goalkeeper on his left side, from about 20 yards out.  The final score was 1-0.

Sophomore Ryan Bilyeu, who was making his second straight varsity start as Goalkeeper, shutout the YellowJackets.  Bilyeu was mainly untested thanks to quality interior defense by the Tigers. (rp)

JV Contest — Ozark 1, Lebanon 1 (Tie)

Tough Start to the Week for Ozark Tigers

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008
Nixa wins over Ozark in Double Overtime on Tuesday.

After a scoreless first half, Nixa got on the board after Ozark’s Goalkeeper, Sophomore Ryan Bilyeu, was charged with fouling a Nixa forward in the box, resulting in a penalty kick.  Nixa’s Josh Rose stepped up and finished the PK to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.  The score remain that until the 75th minute when Zach Moore scored from a throw in tying the score at 1-1.

In overtime both teams had chances to score but Ozark had no answer for Nixa Goalkeeper Marcus Fernandes, who made several game saving stops.  Chandler Hale scored with four minutes left in overtime to give Nixa the 2-1 win.  The JV match ended in a 0-3 loss for the Tigers.
Early Goal Not Enough to hold back Hillcrest on Monday

The Hillcrest Hornets doubled up the Ozark Tigers on Monday night at the Cooper Complex, the final score 6-3.

For the third game in a row, Ozark scored first when Seth Hampton tapped in a goal from a short distance with a nice assist credited to freshman, Jacob Agee.  But only five minutes later Hillcrest tied the game on a goal from senior Bryce Collier. Five minutes later, Hillcrest then scored off a corner kick that Ozark was unable to clear out of the box.  Hillcrest’s third goal of the half came after a center pass to a Hillcrest forward bounced off the knee of a Hillcrest player then off of a Ozark defender and then in the goal, giving them a 3-1 lead.  Zach Moore narrowed the margin in the 37th minute on a penalty kick after Hillcrest was called for a handball in the box.

Hillcrest opened the scoring in the second half on a free kick by Collier.  Collier put his right foot on the ball, bending it to the right, just out of the reach of the goalkeeper.  Hillcrest scored again on a ball that Ozark failed to clear out of its zone. increasing their lead to 5-2.  Ozark came right back off the kickoff with Zach Marlow using his speed, running down a long pass, and beating the Hillcrest goalkeeper for a goal, making the score 5-3.  But the Tigers could get no closer, and Hillcrest scored a final goal near the end of the game making the final score 6-3.

Goals for Hillcrest — Collier 3, Michael Freeman 2, Cody Wallace 1
Goals for Ozark — Moore 1, Marlow 1, Hampton 1

JV Score — Ozark 4 Hillcrest 0
Goals scored by Jacob Merritt, L.J. Van Helden, Sterling Lowry 2.
